Throughout Antonella Casella’s career she has combined her practice as a circus artist and director with the development of new companies and initiatives committed to social change and artistic innovation. She was co-founder of Rock’n’Roll Circus (now Circa Contemporary Circus). She was the founding Artistic Director of Vulcana Women’s Circus, where she co-designed participatory programs with a wide variety of women’s health organisations, and directed acclaimed, feminist circus shows. As Senior Artistic Associate at Circus Oz, she initiated a wide range of artform development programs, including Sidesault-at-the-Melba, Australia’s only experimental circus festival. In 2023, Antonella’s first academic article “Not Bread and Circuses: Counter-hegemonic circus practice and the Global Justice Movement” was published in New Community. She is currently a Board Member of the Australian support organisation for The Circus Center, Addis Ababa.
