Open Training Program

A safe training space

NICA’s Open Training Program provides a safe training space for NICA students, staff, graduates and other circus professional. This program is offered outside of the core NICA Ed program hours and individuals and groups wishing to utilise the facilities must have an application approved and adhere to the conditions of use as outlined in the sections below.

Who can apply? 

Applications are welcome from the following: 

  • NICA graduates 

  • NICA Represents performers 

  • Current NICA Rec training staff 

  • Circus practitioners who can satisfy competency in their area of practice 

  • Adults currently enrolled in a NICA Rec course at an advanced level 

  • People over the age of 16 who can show advanced skill levels

Hours & Pricing

Open training is only available after-hours during term, Monday to Thursday 5:30 – 8:30pm and Saturday 9:30 – 3:30pm. These hours may be restricted whilst COVID-19 continues to impact our program delivery, and additionally during preproduction, show times or times when the National Circus Centre (NCC) is unavailable.

Open Training Program cards are valid for each Open Training Session (3 hours Monday - Friday, 6 hours on Saturdays) and can be purchased from the NICA Rec Office prior to training. 

You must take your card to each training session. If you don’t have your card, you may not be permitted to train.   


What can you train?

The Open Training Program is to practice and maintain the skills and rehearsal of skills you are competent in training safely. Flying trapeze, teeterboard, group bike, casting, swinging trapeze/cloud swing and trampoline are only available by special request. 

Training approval is subject to the Head of Circus/Venue Supervisor. You will need to provide supporting material such as a CV, references and video links to previous work, as well as potentially conducting a skills assessment in the NICA space.

Conditions & Penalties

  • If you are caught in the space without having completed the OTP application process, your details will be recorded, you will be asked to leave immediately and you will not be eligible to join the program for 30 days. Second time offenders will be ineligible to join the program until the following year. 

  • Open Training Program members who are in the space without booking their training session will be asked to leave immediately and suspended from the program for 24 hours. Second time offenders will be suspended for one week. Third time offenders will be suspended from the program until the following year. 

  • Open Training Program members who have outstanding fees will not be able to book in for training until their fees are up to date.

  • Individuals who fail to follow the directions of the venue supervisor will be suspended from the program. Additional consequences may apply to staff and students at the discretion of the Program Manager.

  • NICA reserves the right to refuse refund of any monies as a result of suspension or banning.

To book an Open Training Program session, please contact our NICA Rec team before 4pm Monday to Thursday and by 4pm on Friday for Saturday training. 

Bookings will only be accepted once your application has been successful, and you have attended any necessary induction/competency assessments.

Alumni Training Program

Bachelor of Circus Arts graduates who have been approved for the Open Training Program can also access the Alumni Training Program during core teaching hours. Only 5 graduates are allowed in the space for each session making it important to book early.

Hours & Pricing

We have two sessions available a day during NICA school term dates, Monday to Friday: 9:00 – 12:00pm and 1:00 – 4:00pm. After 5pm is Open Training time with different arrangements in place. No access is available during NICA closure dates. 

The cost is the same as for the Open Training Program with the same card used to pay for both programs.

What can you train?

Permitted activities during core teaching times include basic skill training, specialty skill training and group act training. All skills must have been approved through either the OTP or ATP application process. Amendments can be submitted.

Additional Training Terms & Conditions

  • At times we may have limited space and priority will be given to the NICA core teaching programs.

  • You can access your trainer of choice for advice, but this cannot infringe on NICA core teaching commitments by that member of staff. You are not permitted to receive free classes from core trainers during this time.

  • To arrange a private tuition session with a core trainer after hours, please contact the NICA Rec team.

  • Any equipment brought into the space must be inspected by NICA production staff for safety checks before use.

  • Sharing your learning experience with current NICA students in the same discipline is most welcome, but you are not required to teach the current students.

  • 5 graduates are allowed in the space for each session during NICA’s core course teaching hours. Each graduate is welcome to stay for the length of the session (3 hours starting at 9AM or 1PM) using the principle of ‘first booked in, first served.’

  • All training sessions must be pre-booked to ensure that we do not overcrowd the space. You can book up to 2 weeks in advance. 

  • If you are unable to attend a booked session, please call reception to cancel prior to the session: 03 9214 6975. If you don’t, remember you are holding a spot from another Alumni.

  • The participants acknowledge that by make a booking they will be bound by all NICA safety policies and procedures and all other NICA relevant policies regarding usage of the space.

  • You must sign in at reception upon arrival.

Application Process

  1. Fill out the relevant Application Form and submit to the NICA Rec Office with supporting documents/links. Incomplete forms or applications without public liability insurance or proof of Medicare/OSHC will not be accepted. 

  1. You will be notified via email when your application has reached an outcome. 

  1. Pay the Open Training Fee at the NICA Rec Office. 

  1. Due to limited training spaces, members of the Open Training Program must book for every training session either by phone, email or in person. 

  1. Once membership fees have been paid, you will be booked in for an initial Safety Induction with the Venue Supervisor. 

  1. To commence Open Training, you need to check in with the Venue Supervisor at the start of each session and have your name checked against the booking sheet and training fee paid/checked off. 

  1. If you have not booked in advance, you may be refused entry.

Insurance & Other Requirements

  • Except for NICA Students, all applicants must hold a current public liability insurance certificate and forward a copy with your application. Your insurance will need to be renewed each year and a new copy provided to NICA Rec for you to continue training. 

  • All applicants must have either a Medicare card or Overseas Health Cover. 

  • All applicants must complete the indemnity form attached to the application form. 

  • We strongly recommend applicants have Personal Accident Insurance and ambulance cover (http://www.ambulance.vic.gov.au/Membership.html). Note that emergency transport can cost over $2000.

  • Please note, in case of injury NICA will not cover any medical expenses or loss of income.
