NICA Alumni shines in Cirque du Soleil's 'Luzia'

Cirque du Soleil's captivating spectacle 'Luzia' is set to mesmerize audiences in Melbourne in 2024, promising a journey through the vibrant culture and landscapes of Mexico. Among the ensemble cast, one name stands out — Nelson Symles, a 2017 graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), who brings his exceptional talent to the forefront of this dazzling production.

According to a feature in The Australian, Symles is among the Australians who dared to chase their dreams and found themselves soaring with Cirque du Soleil. His success underscores the global recognition of Australian talent in the realm of circus arts.

In an interview with Vogue, Symles shared insights into his experience with 'Luzia,' describing it as a celebration of Mexico's rich cultural tapestry. He emphasized the show's fusion of acrobatics, music, and visual storytelling, creating a captivating experience for audiences of all ages.

Symles' journey from NICA to Cirque du Soleil exemplifies the synergy between academic training and real-world success. NICA has long been hailed as a nurturing ground for aspiring circus performers, equipping them with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in a competitive industry.

As 'Luzia' makes its way to Melbourne, Symles' presence adds an extra layer of excitement for audiences and NICA alumni alike. His journey serves as an inspiration for current and future students, showcasing the possibilities that await those who dare to dream big and pursue their passion with dedication and perseverance.

“It’ll be awesome for the coaches that coached me at NICA and see what I've been up to, and for my grandma to come and see it finally,” Smyles tells Vogue. “Just because it's what took me away. So to bring it home, it's kind of surreal, really.”

Symles' journey with Cirque du Soleil is not just a personal milestone but also a reflection of the collaborative spirit that defines the circus community. His fellow performers, many of whom hail from diverse backgrounds and cultures, contribute to the rich tapestry of 'Luzia,' creating a truly immersive experience for audiences worldwide.
