Avan Whaite
Avan Whaite started training circus in 1996 through various community groups in his home town of Perth, Western Australia. Then in 2001 he moved to Melbourne as part of the first year of the National Institute of Circus Arts. There he developed a diverse range of circus skills, with particular excellence in Chinese pole (mat chinois).
Premiering solo Chinese pole work in Australia, Avan Whaite went on to perform across Australia, and internationally, in countries including: Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Mexico, Russia, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Qatar, etc.
He worked with companies including: Stalker, Strange fruit, GOP, Palazzo, and a vast range of independent production companies.

Furthermore, he co-founded Circus Catharsis with which he wrote and performed in 3 of his own shows; the frog prince, Evermind, and the diary of Alexander Fleming, receiving several awards including the "la mama" script writing award, and the Circus Oz award. He then went on to create "Idle Hands" 2012, and "...We should quit" 2013, which received the "Best circus" award in Melbourne fringe festival. He now runs his own production company "Black Carnation Productions" which co-produced “The Barbaroi” 2015-present, and directed and produced "Undertone", winner of the "best circus" award Perth Fringeworld 2016.
Avan is interested in inter-disciplinary performance, and the creation of physical narrative by combining a diverse range of dance and circus techniques. His work is typified by choreographic originality, and walks a line between moments of unbelievable strength or agility, and those of great delicacy.
