Jon Burtt and Yaron Lifschitz (CIRCA) will discuss the creation of new work and the creative process in circus in relation to ideas explored in the book Contemporary Circus. This new book co-authored by Jon Burtt with Katie Lavers and Louis Patrick Leroux combines new critical performance theory alongside insights into contemporary creative practice in the circus arts gathered from conversations with 24 circus creators from 10 different countries.

Dr Jon Burtt is a researcher and Lecturer in Dance and Performance Studies at Macquarie University, Sydney. He teaches across dance, and theatre, and circus in the Department of Media, Music, Communication, and Cultural Studies. He was Researcher-in-Residence at the National Circus School in Montreal (2011–2012) and is a Cirque du Monde Instructor in Social Circus. He has published on circus in numerous academic journals including Theatre, Dance and Performance Training; Journal of Arts and Communities; International Journal of the Arts in Society; and New Theatre Quarterly, He is Associate Editor on The Routledge Circus Studies Reader and co-author of Contemporary Circus (Routledge 2019).
Yaron Lifschitz is Artistic Director and CEO of CIRCA. Since graduating from the Graduate Director’s Course at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney, Lifschitz has directed over 60 productions including large-scale events, opera, theatre, physical theatre, and circus. His productions have been presented at major festivals and venues around the world including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; the Barbican, London; Les Nuits de Fourvière, France; Chamäleon Theater, Berlin; and all the major Australian international arts festivals. He has created more than thirty works for CIRCA which have been performed in 40 countries and seen by over one million people.
