Lewie West

As a child, Lewie West trained in gymnastics and break dancing, as well as trampolining and youth circus before investing all of his energy into circus and graduating from the Bachelor of Circus Arts in 2008 at age 20. While at NICA, Lewie specialised in handbalancing, tumbling and straps, and came into school an hour or an hour and a half early to practice handstands because “there’s no cheating or shortcuts”.

Immediately after graduating, Lewie joined the Australian Circus company C!RCA, and following three weeks of rehearsal, he was on his first international tour in Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands.

Since then his life has been a blur of performing, training and rehearsing all around the world.  Highlights have included performing on Broadway, being part of the first Australian company to perform at La TOHU - the purpose-built, circus-specific venue in Montreal - opening the 2nd International Circus Festival, selling out at the Auch circus festival in France, doing a guest spot in a 7 Doigts de la Main cabaret, performing at the Barbican in London, the Sydney Opera House and doing workshops and shows through regional Queensland.

In 2013, Lewie competed in the elite, invitation-only tournament at the 34th Festival Mondial Cirque de Demain in Paris. Lewie’s impressive and beautiful performance on Straps was up against 25 international acts, and earned him one of four gold medals awarded by the jury of ten representatives from renowned circus schools and companies, including Cirque du Soleil, from across Europe, Asia and Australia.

He has his own youtube channel at, and it’s well worth a visit.
